Hiking on the most famous and popular walking route in Zagori: crossing the Vikos gorge, truly a unique experience! The route starts from the village of Monodendri and ends at Vikos. It is a path in an impressive ravine with very high vertical limestone slopes. The tectonics and the corrosive action of the glaciers and rain, have created this wonderful and at the same time very interesting geological phenomenon. The scale is immense and the power of nature imposing. The path is clear and well marked. Arriving at the startling plane-shaded springs of the Voidomatis river near the end of the route is really unforgettable and also a good chance for a cool swim just before the final ascent to the hamlet of Vikos.
The gorge belongs to the Vikos-Aoos National Park, in northern Pindos. Vikos is listed as the world's "deepest relative to its width" gorge by the Guinness Book of Records.
